Dump objections

The residents of Buldoo and the Caithness Community Council have objected to the UKAEA plan to build a GBP110 million low-level waste facility at Dounreay. The UKAEA says there is no room on the existing licensed site for the facility which they now want to build outwith the site. The objectors want the facility inside the existing site. Reactors restart

The Swedish Nuclear Inspectorate (SKI) has said it will allow the Forsmark 1 and 2 reactors to restart following the incident in July. SKI said further safety work is needed on the Kraftgrupp AB reactor before it can restart. (www.ski.se)

Statutory inspection

Concerns over safety have mean the three-yearly statutory inspection of the Hinkley Point B reactor has been bought forward. Special attention will be paid to cracked boiler tube pipes. (BBC News 25/09/06)

Nuclear support

The president of the Royal Society, Lord Rees of Ludlow, has called for new nuclear reactors in the UK to reduce greenhouse emissions. (Manchester Evening News 28/09/06)

Waste substitution

The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority has published a review of the methodoly used by the British Nuclear Group for waste substitution - the policy where intermediate and low level waste from reprocessing overseas spent fuel is retained in the UK and an amount of high level waste containing the equivalent amount of radiation is returned to the overseas customer. BNG profit

The British Nuclear Group, which runs Sellafield, made gross profits of GBP72 million in 2005-06 based on gross revenue of over GBP2 billion. This is a drop of GBP36 million in profits from the previous year. (Guardian 04/07/06)

B30 heart link

Cumbrians Opposed to a Radioactive Environment (CORE) has called for an investigation into a possible link between heart diseases suffered by workers at Sellafield and exposure to radiation - especially for staff who work in the B30 spent fuel facility. (Whitehaven News 08/06/06)

A new spent fuel storage facility funded by the UK was opened this week in Murmansk in northern Russia. (www.dti.gov.uk)
