Kjeller restarts
The Norwegian Kjeller reactor near Oslo was restarted at the end of
last month following an incident on 9th September. A leak in a pump
caused the reactor JEEP II reactor to shutdown. (www.ife.no)
Socio-economic
The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority has launched a consultation on
its proposed socio-economic policy for consultations with communities
and companies living and working in and around the civil nuclear
sites it is decommissioning. The consultation ends on 19th January
2007. (www.nda.gov.uk, www.niauk.org)
Development Fund
The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority has set up a GBP500,000 North
Highland Regeneration Fund to develop new businesses to compensate
for the downturn in jobs at Dounreay where decommissioning is
scheduled to finish by 2033. (John O'Groat Journal 06/10/06)
Legal challenge
The environmental group Greenpeace has launched a legal challenge to
the Government's energy review published earlier this year.
Greenpeace argues the review and associated consultation process was
flawed and the Government ignored negative advice about nuclear
power. Greenpeace is calling for a judicial review of the
Government's actions. (www.greenpeace.org.uk)
Train guards
The security for trains carrying nuclear waste is to be stepped-up.
British Transport police will monitor trains travelling between
reactors and Sellafield and security guards employed by Direct Rail
Services will keep watch when the trains are in sidings or depots.
