Kjeller restarts

The Norwegian Kjeller reactor near Oslo was restarted at the end of last month following an incident on 9th September. A leak in a pump caused the reactor JEEP II reactor to shutdown. (www.ife.no)

Socio-economic

The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority has launched a consultation on its proposed socio-economic policy for consultations with communities and companies living and working in and around the civil nuclear sites it is decommissioning. The consultation ends on 19th January 2007. (www.nda.gov.uk, www.niauk.org)

Development Fund

The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority has set up a GBP500,000 North Highland Regeneration Fund to develop new businesses to compensate for the downturn in jobs at Dounreay where decommissioning is scheduled to finish by 2033. (John O'Groat Journal 06/10/06)

Legal challenge

The environmental group Greenpeace has launched a legal challenge to the Government's energy review published earlier this year. Greenpeace argues the review and associated consultation process was flawed and the Government ignored negative advice about nuclear power. Greenpeace is calling for a judicial review of the Government's actions. (www.greenpeace.org.uk)

Train guards

The security for trains carrying nuclear waste is to be stepped-up. British Transport police will monitor trains travelling between reactors and Sellafield and security guards employed by Direct Rail Services will keep watch when the trains are in sidings or depots. (Daily Mirror 02/10/06)

Facility to open

Princess Anne is to officially open the nuclear clean-up research and development facility at Janetstown in Caithness on Tuesday. (John O'Groat Journal 06/10/06)
